Knights discuss faith and experience of Indigenous Catholics in anticipation of visit of Pope Francis to Canada

A recent episode of The W, a conversation series of the Windrider Institute, invites audiences to learn from the Native American experience and recognize the necessity of empathy and grace in healing.
Award-winning film producer Megan Harrington interviewed Supreme Secretary Patrick Mason, a member of the Osage Nation, and Father Maurice Henry Sands, a Native American belonging to the Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes, about Enduring Faith: The Story of Native American Catholics, a 58-minute documentary series that was produced by the Knights of Columbus in 2021.
In addition to the film, which focuses on the history and spiritual and cultural gifts of Indigenous Catholics, they discussed the upcoming visit of Pope Francis to Canada and its significance for First Nation and Native American Catholics.
The executive director of the Black and Indian Mission Office in Washington, D.C., and a longtime Knight, Father Sands grew up on Walpole Island (Bkejwanong First Nation), on the border between Michigan and Ontario.
